If you shop in Richmond or Chesterfield, watch your receipt. Voters in both appeared set to approve a 1% sales tax increase for school construction Tuesday night.

The question was on ballots in 47 Virginia localities, 16 of them in Central Virginia. The money could only go to new school construction and major renovation, and it wouldn't apply to groceries, medicine or personal hygiene products. If approved, it would stay in effect for 20 years.

  • Chesterfield: supervisors could consider raising sales tax from 6% to 7%
  • Richmond pledge: meals tax down 1 percent, property rate down one cent
  • Chesterfield pledge: real estate down 2 cents, personal property down 10 cents
  • Early calls: Middlesex, Prince Edward yes; Amelia, Essex, New Kent no

Results stay unofficial until the state certifies them. Mailed ballots postmarked by Election Day must arrive by Fri., Nov. 6.
